Cypripedium 'Surprise' is a hardy perennial lady's slipper orchid registered in May 2026 under Frosch® Exclusive Perennials brand. A specialized cross between Cypripedium × alaskanum and Cypripedium yatabeanum, this seed-grown strain was named 'Surprise' due to its exceptional and unpredictable variations in floral coloration. Individual plants feature thumbnail-sized flowers ranging dynamically from pale hues to intense, mottled combinations of green, brown, lavender-pink, and deep pink. Unlike traditional clump-forming orchids, this unique variety grows and multiplies via creeping underground rhizomes, spreading outward much like a miniature ground cover.
Engineered for superior garden vigor compared to wild species, this miniature orchid reaches a compact mature height of roughly 20 cm (8 inches) and blooms mid-to-late spring. It is highly resilient, built to withstand summer heat waves, and carries an impressive cold tolerance down to USDA Hardiness Zone 3. For optimal growth, it requires a shaded or partially shaded location shielded from harsh afternoon sun, planted in a highly loose, mineral-rich, and aerated substrate to prevent stagnant moisture and root rot.
