This is a quirky, deciduous miniature species native to the seasonal forests of Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and Myanmar. Unlike many classic Dendrobiums that stay strictly upright, Dendrobium unicum grows clustered, slightly wavy, or sprawling spindle-shaped canes (pseudobulbs) that typically reach only 10 to 20 cm in length.
The biggest thing to know about this plant is that it is deciduous. Every autumn, as the weather cools and dries out, it will naturally drop its narrow leaves, leaving you with bare, somewhat wrinkled, yellowish-brown canes. Don't panic and throw it away—this bald phase is completely normal, and it is exactly what needs to happen for the plant to flower.
