Neofinetia falcata 'Seikai' 青海
$485.00
The Neofinetia falcata 'Seikai' is a highly coveted and historically significant variety of the Japanese "wind orchid," or fuuran. Its history is deeply intertwined with Japanese culture, particularly during the Edo period (1603-1868) 'Seikai' is a truly ancient cultivar, believed to have been passed down through generations by hand division since the 1600s, earning it the title of a "living antique." What makes 'Seikai' so distinct are its unique leaves and growth pattern and flowers. It is a mameba (bean variety) with "Wankyokuba" (curvy leaves) and unlike the typical downward-facing white flowers of many Neofinetia, 'Seikai' produces uniquely shaped, pinkish flowers that face upwards. Seikai means 'ocean wave, a famous iconic Japanese pattern. A key historical aspect is that 'Seikai' is sterile, meaning it cannot be reproduced by seed. All existing 'Seikai' plants are direct divisions of the original lineage, contributing to its rarity and value. A well grown specimen sized seikai is a sight to behold and may take years to achieve. Our plant already is an impressive size and on its way to become an heirloom.
